Nissan has announced at the Guangzhou auto show in China that it plans to launch “at least” two new energy vehicle (NEV) models per year from 2023 under its Venucia brand, as it steps up its global electrification strategy. The auto exhibition runs between 30th December until 8th January, after it was rescheduled due to the recent Covid outbreak.

The Venucia brand was established back in 2010 by Dongfeng Nissan Company, Nissan’s joint venture with Dongfeng Motors based in Wuhan in China’s Hubei province.

According to local reports, Dongfeng Nissan also announced at the show that it has decided to halt all research and development on conventional gasoline vehicles.

The new battery-powered models will be based on Nissan’s dedicated EV platform, while plug-in hybrid models will also tap into Nissan’s in-house technologies. The joint venture also said it plans to explore opportunities to bring hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to the local Chinese market.

Nissan displayed two new Venucia NEV models at the Guangzhou auto show: a concept car based on Nissan’s dedicated EV platform; and the DD-i hybrid which uses as 1.5L turbocharged engine.

Nissan and its joint ventures sold a total of 835,388 vehicles in China in the first eleven months of 2022, a decline of just over 19% on the same period of the previous year.
