The Tank 300, a 4,760 mm long rugged looking ladder frame chassis 4×4, was originally an additional model for the Wey brand.

The world debut of a pre-production vehicle took place at the Chengdu motor show in July 2020. One month later GWM announced details of two powertrains. The first of the pair is a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 which produces 348 hp and 500 Nm. Drive goes to both axles via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The alternative is a plug-in hybrid. This has the same engine but combined power and torque are 510 hp and 750 Nm thanks to the addition of a single motor. The transmission is a nine-speed automatic.

Deliveries to dealerships in China commenced in December 2020. Then in April, Great Wall Motor turned Tank into a brand, the original Wey Tank 300 & 300 PHEV becoming the Tank 300 and 300 PHEV. Each should be facelifted in 2024 and replaced in 2027/2028.

One of several additions to the line-up will be called 400. Due for launch in 2022, it premiered as a prototype at the Chengdu motor show in August. This big, rugged and angular 4×4 shares much with several other Tank models.

The latest addition is a 4,850 mm long SUV. Revealed as a prototype at the Chengdu motor show in September, Chinese market pricing for the 500 has just been announced so sales will be starting soon.

Power and torque are 260 kW and 500 Nm with the engine a 3.0-litre petrol V6 turbo and the transmission a nine-speed automatic. Along with the powertrain, the 500 shares many other components with the smaller 400 and larger 600, including the separate chassis architecture.

The 600, which should have a six- to seven-year life cycle, was launched alongside the 500 at the Chengdu motor show in August. This ladder frame chassis SUV is 5,050 mm long, 1,934 wide and 1,905 high with a 2,850 mm wheelbase.

Production of the 600 commenced at a then-new plant in July. Jingmen, which is in Hubei province, opened with an annual capacity of 100,000 vehicles. GWM stated in October 2020 that this factory would be for pick-ups and SUVs.

As per the 500, a 3.0-litre turbo V6 with outputs of 260 Nm and 500 Nm is the sole engine, drive going to both axles via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

This powertrain should also be standard fit for the 700, coming next year. This future SUV appeared as a prototype at the Shanghai motor show earlier in 2021, supporting the brand’s debut.

The prototype at Auto Shanghai had a purposeful appearance, including round headlights, a side-hinged tailgate adorned with a spare tyre cover and a huge TANK badge. The engine is expected to be GWM’s 3.0-litre turbo V6.

Finally, the 800 – thought to be a year away from launch. A prototype was displayed alongside other models at the Shanghai show in April, GWM noting that its power came from a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a biturbo V6 and one motor. All-wheel drive would be standard and the gearbox a nine-speed automatic.
