Tesla recalls Cybertruck for accelerator pedal repair

Pedals can dislodge and cause the vehicle to unintentionally accelerate

Graeme Roberts April 23 2024

Tesla reportedly has recalled 3,878 Cybertruck pickups to rework or replace accelerator pedals which can dislodge and cause the vehicle to unintentionally accelerate, increasing risk of a crash.

The recall had shades of a massive Toyota recall in 2010 though that was for pedals sticking rather than dislodging.

Tesla received notice of two customer claims related to the issue, according to a recall report submitted to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Bloomberg reported.

The company said, when high force was applied to the Cybertruck’s accelerator, the pedal might dislodge and become trapped by interior trim.

Tesla would fix the accelerator pedals free of charge.

Bloomberg noted the recall provideded a first glimpse of how many Cybertrucks had been sold since CEO Elon Musk handed over the first pickups to customers in November. Tesla had yet to break out deliveries for the model in its quarterly production and deliveries reports.

Musk had estimated it would take 12 to 18 months for Tesla to assemble the stainless steel-clad (recollections of the DMC DeLorean) Cybertrucks in high volume.

He had cautioned that the company was unlikely to reach an annualised production rate of 250,000 pickups until sometime next year, Bloomberg said.
