Nissan has started production of the taxi version of its NV200 van at its factory in the central Mexican state of Morelos.

The vehicle was chosen last year by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission as the city’s exclusive taxi. First deliveries of the new yellow cabs will start in the autumn.

The Morelos facility was the first Nissan full manufacturing car plant outside Japan and was built in 1966.

With demand exceeding supply, the plant is operating 23 hours a day, according to Nissan Mexicana.
