A satellite that is designed to test and operate advanced navigation and mobile telecommunications equipment, some designed especially for the vehicle industry, is due to be launched by the European Space Agency today from its space centre in French Guiana.

The Artemis satellite will carry new telecoms technologies in satellite navigation, mobile communication services and inter-satellite data exchanges.

Many of these services have been tailor-made for telecoms from moving terminals, notably in cars and trucks. Artemis is intended to broadcast accurate navigation information to transport operators as an element of the EU’s EGNOS navigation system.

Most of the satellite was built by Alenia Spazio of Italy.
