BMW has revealed the new X3 to the media at an event in South Carolina. The G01 series version of this Spartanburg-made SUV is not only 61mm longer than the F25 X3 which it replaces but is also larger than the rival Audi Q5.

The first versions of this D segment SUV will be the four-cylinder diesel xDrive20d and xDrive30d, plus the in-line six-cylinder petrol M40i xDrive. The xDrive20i and xDrive30i will be added in relevant countries from early 2018. The architecture is 35up, also known as CLAR. This replaces L7, which was used for the second generation model.

The third generation X3 is 4,716mm in length, which is a gain of 61mm. The rival Audi Q5 measures only 4,663mm from end to end. Other rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, Lexus RX, Range Rover Velar, Jaguar F-PACE, and to a lesser extent, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Infiniti QX60 and Jeep Cherokee.

At 550 litres, boot capacity is the same as the F25 series X3. This extends to 1,600 litres when the standard 40:20:20 split-folding rear seats are folded.

The forthcoming BMW-Brilliance Zinoro 3E, a plug-in SUV for China, should be closely related to the X3. There will also be an electric version of the X3, while a PHEV variant should be badged as the xDrive40e.

In addition to production at Spartanburg, BBA, the Brilliance Automotive and BMW Group joint venture, will make the X3 and its Da Dong plant in the Chinese city of Shenyang.
