Honda to launch Triton-based pickup truck in Southeast Asia

The deal strengthens its collaboration with the Alliance partners.

Japanese automaker Honda Motor has agreed to sell Mitsubishi Motors’ Thai-made Triton pickup trucks under its own brand across Southeast Asia, according to reports in Japan citing sources close to the company.

The move will allow Honda to expand its model range in a region where its sales have dropped sharply in the last few years, as competition from Chinese brands continues to surge. For Mitsubishi, the deal should help it increase output and strengthen economies of scale in a segment that has come under severe pressure in Thailand over the last few years.

Overall sales of pickup trucks in Thailand have plunged from over 388,000 units in 2022 to just 144,000 units in 2025.

Mitsubishi’s main global production facility for the Triton is in Laem Chabang, just east of Thailand’s capital Bangkok. The facility produced around 113,000 Triton pickup trucks last year, which were exported to markets worldwide, and a further 25,000 Pajero SUVs based on the same ladder chassis.

According to reports, Honda will sell versions of the Triton pickup truck across Southeast Asia from 2028, further strengthening its collaboration with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

The Nissan Navara Diesel (D27) pickup truck, launched earlier this year in Australia and New Zealand, is also based on the Mitsubishi Triton and is produced at the Laem Chabang facility.
