Indonesia has exported its first shipment of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, as part of a US$10bn mining downstream and manufacturing programme aimed at adding value locally to the country’s vast mineral resources. Indonesia requires raw mineral resources such as nickel and aluminium to be processed domestically, rather than exported as raw ores.

The batteries were produced and exported by REPT Battero Indonesia, a joint venture that is 60% owned by China’s Rept Battero Energy Company, part of the Tsingshan Group. The plant is located in the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in Central Halmahera, North Maluku, a region rich in nickel deposits.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended REPT Battero Indonesia’s export inauguration ceremony, and pointed out that resource management remains central to the nation’s industrialization drive, adding that “we must manage our natural resources effectively so that we can generate welfare and prosperity for our people and nation.”

The event also celebrated the launch of commercial operations at three other companies under the government’s industrial down-streaming programme, including heavy construction equipment manufacturer PT XCMG Indonesia Manufacturing, PT Blue Sparking Energy and Pioneer Aluminium Industries Ltd. Seven other projects broke ground recently.

The launch ceremony was also attended by high-ranking cabinet officials, including the Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan Roeslani; Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto; Chairman of the National Economic Council, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan; Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition, Bahlil Lahadalia.
