A survey conducted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA)
has concluded that voice recognition is ‘a viable alternative’ to in-car navigation
and telematics, thus reducing the risks they may pose, according to South African
news sources (30/11/00).

Citing the survey, these local reports say that voice recognition is the key
to accessing both the Internet and e-mail when at the wheel, while also able
to operate CD changers, navigation units (voice-controlled) and cellular phones
(hands-free).

It is reported that new car designs are also incorporating remote controls
to adjust both audio and video systems via the steering wheel, hence preventing
the driver from taking their eyes off the road, said the reports.
