Three Japanese car makers under the General Motors umbrella will join in bulk purchasing deals this year to help contain costs, according to the BRG Townsend Automotive Newswire, which said that Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries, Isuzu Motors and Suzuki Motor began purchasing glass sheet, wheels and electronic components together under a joint procurement contract last year.

According to BRG Townsend, the cost savings have been significant enough for them to expand the list this year to over half a dozen items including airbags, seat belts, tyres and steel.

Components jointly purchased will be used at General Motors’ plants in East Asia and the Japanese plants of the three Japanese companies, the report said.
