Following is a statement in response to today’s Washington Post story that alleges that Explorer has a higher rate of tire accidents. There are two graphics that illustrate the point.

This flawed story ignores many facts: In Florida, and nationally, Explorer has a better safety record than other compact SUVs. Florida has a relatively high rate of Firestone tire tread separation accidents. Yet in Florida, and nationally, the rollover fatality rate for Explorer is substantially lower than for other compact SUVs. Explorer also has a lower fatality rate for all accident types compared to equivalent SUVs in Florida, and nationally. Explorer is one of safest vehicles on the road.

Furthermore, Goodyear reports that it knows of not one single claim against Goodyear tires on Explorers in Florida. No lawsuits, no rollovers, no injuries, no fatalities.
