Delphi Packard Electric Systems has recalled about 220 workers permanently laid off last winter due to the retirement of around 700 hourly workers this year, Associated Press (AP) reported.

Citing Delphi spokeswoman Ann Cornell, AP said that Delphi Packard began recalling the workers late in July.

AP said the workers were laid-off early in March when falling orders from car makers forced a cut in production of vehicle electrical wiring systems.

The permanent layoffs came on top of temporary layoffs of hundreds of workers. At one point, about 1,200 of the division’s 5,260 hourly workers were temporarily off work, AP added.

AP said that IUE-CWA Local 717 members in June approved a special retirement waiver programme to allow the workers to be recalled.
