Online automotive information provider Edmunds.com has launched enhanced automotive image products with Hyundai North America as a first customer.
The enhanced images, optimised for both web and print applications, will be used both for Edmunds.com’s own products and by clients who license it either direct or through one of the distribution partners – Reynolds and Reynolds, Dealer.com, HomeNet and XIGroup.
New products include exterior 360 degree spins, interior 360 degree panoramas and a standardised automotive stock image library. The stock image library consists of a standardised set of interior and exterior vehicle shots, and provides one standard exterior image of each vehicle depicted in every available colour.
“The web sites of dealers and automakers are natural homes for our enhanced imagery,” said Edmunds Information Solutions General Manager Seth Berkowitz. “The striking images and multimedia tools present vehicles in a very compelling way.”
Working closely with Edmunds.com’s editorial staff, the enhanced imagery team of 10 full-time photographers and videographers claims to have unsurpassed access to vehicles, giving it a major advantage over competitors, who, Edmunds claims, are often incapable of completing assignments for clients.

By GlobalDataEdmunds operates a mobile enhanced imagery studio, allowing staffers to go on location for earliest access to the new car models. A new heavy-duty vehicle with all necessary equipment tows a portable, custom-constructed turntable and, at each location, staff erect a domed environment around the turntable in which photographers shoot from three different cameras to capture high-resolution images.
Edmunds.com’s investment in enhanced imagery was motivated in part by the development of Inside Line, its new high-speed, on-screen car magazine, which uses video, photography and interactive media in innovative ways.
Inside Line will soon laucnh the so called ‘Interactive Vehicle Advisor’, a multimedia web tool that invites users to select ‘hot spots’ on a particular vehicle and view brief video clips describing and reviewing the features related to the hot spots.
