The United Auto Workers union is considering helping General Motors cut costs because it expects another bleak year at the automaker, Reuters reported, citing the Wall Street Journal.

Reuters said the paper reported that the union’s vice president, Richard Shoemaker, told a group of union leaders this week the UAW is weighing concessions, pending an independent review of GM’s finances – the union has hired a team of outside experts to conduct the review, the paper added.

Reuters noted that, if the union goes ahead with concessions, it would mark a reversal since the UAW has recently questioned the depth of GM’s financial problems.
