Reuters reports that media outlets from television stations to the giant video screens of Times Square will be largely commercial-free on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the WTC and Pentagon.

The report says that marketers are seeking to avoid appearing to cash in on the tragedy.

The Reuters report points out that following last year’s attacks, a number of companies ran campaigns that evoked September 11, including GM’s ‘Keep America Rolling’ ads offering 0% financing. However, some 9/11 themed campaigns have attracted criticism on grounds of taste.

The advertising slots will instead be taken by 9/11 memorial items.
