Pierburg has developed a new compact EGR valve for petrol engines. From 2016 it will be made at a South Carolina factory for supply to a US OEM.
The series production contract was placed in summer 2014. The newly developed module will enable the company to expand its share of the North American market. The component's comparatively small and compact footprint takes into account the continuing reduction in engine installation space typical of today's engine models.
Since the early 1980s, EGR valves have chiefly been employed for the reduction of diesel engine emissions but now are increasingly fitted to petrol engines given the incremental fuel-saving potential of such valves.
Pierburg's annual production volume of EGR valves and modules is 6m units. Its factory in Spain has now supplied over 75m. The supplier also makes them in Germany, the Czech Republic, India, and China.
