Hyundai Automotive Group, including the Kia brand, saw its market share reach almost 15% in the US last month.

Sales of 72,440 units in July was up 0.2% from the previous month. Last year the Hyundai and Kia brands captured 10.5% of the US market and sales have continued to rise steadily so far in 2011.

The group said the increase had been led by the growing popularity of mid-sized sedans such as the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima. The Sonata sold over 20,000 units in the US in July, up 17% year on year.

For the first three months of 2011, Hyundai-Kia ranked third in the mid-sized sedan segment, capturing 15% of the market with sales of 66,554 units.

July data put Hyundai-Kia in third place behind Toyota and Nissan in terms of mid-sized sedan market share. In the first quarter of 2011, Toyota took 17% of the market while Nissan vehicles accounted for 15.6%. Honda was fourth with just under 15%.
