The dimming day running lights (DRLs) we spotted on Jaguar’s lightly remodelled 2011 XF line last week were introduced to meet vehicle lighting laws, the automaker told just-auto.

“The dimming function is in fact designed to meet lighting legislation,” Jaguar Cars press officer Faye Goldstraw said in an email.

“Manufacturers have the choice of either dimming the DRLs when using directional indicators, or indeed, switch off the DRLs completely. Jaguar specified the dimming option on XF for the UK, Europe and the ‘rest of the world’.

“Interestingly though, they are switched off in the USA due to different legislation.”
