Tofas, a joint venture between Fiat and local firm Koc, has said it has laid off 657 workers amid poor demand for cars.

In a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, Tofas said another 241 workers had taken voluntary leave. Last month, Tofas announced it would halt production between Dec. 27-Jan. 12.

Other automakers in Turkey have announced similar measures as inventory has risen and both domestic and export markets have turned down.
