New vehicle sales in Thailand jumped by 52.5% year-on-year to 132,680 units in September, from 87,012 in the same month a year earlier, according to data released by the Federation of Thai Industries.

Year-to-date sales were up by almost 49% at 998,717 units, from 670,970 units in the same period of 2011. The market is on track to set a new record high this year in the region of 1.3m units, helped by first-time buyer incentives and strong pent-up demand carried over from last year.

Exports increased by 8.4% year-on-year to 98,268 units in September, for a value of THB47.2bn while year-to-date exports were up by almost 15% at 735,254 units.

Vehicle production rose by 31.2% to 228,500 units in September and by almost 32.8% in the first nine months of the year to 1,706,389 units.
