South-east Asia accounted for over one million car and truck sales last year –
the first time since the 1997 economic crisis – says an industry consultant.

According to Automotive Resources Asia, total car and truck sales in Thailand,
Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia increased by 50 percent to 1.03 million
in 2000 – an increase from 673,000 in 1999.

Vehicle sales in both Malaysia and Thailand climbed 20 percent, and sales in
Indonesia – which dwindled to only 93,000 in 1999 due to political uncertainties
– jumped 270 percent last year to 344,000.

The region last topped the one million mark in auto sales in 1996, where 1.2
million vehicles were sold.
