Sibur has completed the upgrade of the Yuzhno-Balyksky Gas Processing Plant (GPP), adding more than 100 ktpa (kilo tonnes per annum) of natural gas liquids (NGLs).

The opening ceremony that followed the completion of the upgrade was attended by Natalya Komarova, Governor of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, Yugra and Dmitry Konov, chairman of Sibur’s Management Board.

Yuzhno-Balyksky GPP is one of Sibur’s largest gas processing plants. The factory has an annual APG (associated petroleum gas) processing capacity of more than 3 bcm (billlion cubic metres) preventing greenhouse gas emissions of around 10m tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.

Yuzhno-Balyksky GPP produces dry stripped gas and NGLs, which comprise the key feedstock for Sibur’s petrochemical facilities making plastics, rubbers and other products. NGL output exceeds 1-mtpa. Dry stripped gas is supplied to Gazprom‘s transportation system.

The plant’s major overhaul, aimed at upgrading its production capacities and enhancing the efficiency of APG (associated petrol gas) processing, started in 2014.

It was part of the programme of government support for investment projects implemented in Russia. Total project investments were around RUB2.9bn (US$49.3m).

The overhaul exercise covered six production units, including low-temperature condensing and rectification, where new equipment was installed. This helped raise the unit’s output to 2.89 bcm a year, with recovery rate of target APG components reaching 98%.

The project also saw the construction and launch of five new units, including an absorption dehydration operation and a compressor booster station with annual output of 2-bcm and 1.5 bcm respectively.

“Yuzhno-Balyksky GPP is a very special story,” said Komarova.

“It is a rapidly growing plant among the industry’s pioneers in our region. Growing and evolving through its own resources, technologies, and knowledge, Yuzhno-Balyksky GPP is a vibrant example of import substitution as a driving force of the Russian economy.”
