Japan’s used car exports to Russia decreased 91.4% on the year to slightly over 2,400 cars in January.

Itar-Tass reported that the decrease follows an increase in import tariffs applying to used cars, as well as currency movements.

Citing the Japan Used Motor Vehicle Exporters Association (JUMVEA) as source, the report added that around 563,400 used cars were exported from Japan to Russia in 2008.

The used car trade between Japan and Russia is centred around the eastern port of Vladivostok, the scene of recent demonstrations against the Moscow government – in part a response to the impact the tariff increases have had on the local economy.
