Hyundai will start vehicle production at its new Russia plant at St Petersburg next January, the company has told local media.

The company plans to start test production of small and mid-size models in May. Hyundai broke ground at the EUR330m (US$400m) factory in June 2008 and expects to produce up to 100,000 cars a year.

The factory is being built in St Petersburg’s Kamenka industrial zone and Hyundai has joined a number of foreign carmakers establishing production in the area, including Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Suzuki and Mitsubishi.
