Renault has confirmed a new 250-mile battery pack for the Zoe on sale later this year.

While the vehicle offers a record NEDC driving range of 250 miles (400km), twice the distance delivered by the model at the time of its original launch, in real-world driving, the automaker estimates the new ‘ZE 40’ battery has a range of 186 miles (300km) in urban or suburban areas

“This month Renault passed 100,000 electric vehicles sold and now ZOE will travel up to 250 miles (400km) without recharging. We are continuing to push in areas where innovation matters most for Renault customers. Making it easy for them to choose electric, with new connected services to enhance their driving experience, is a top priority for us and for Zoe customers,” said Carlos Ghosn, Groupe Renault chairman and CEO

“It’s a breakthrough in all-electric motoring that will provide the range needed to make any motorist comfortable choosing electric.”

General Motors’ Europe’s Opel Ampera-e also made its debut at the French show. It’s essentially a rebadge of the North American Chevrolet Bolt which GM said recently would have an EPA-estimated range of 238 miles, well up on rivals such as the Leaf which are now good for about 125 miles. The metric conversion from 238 miles is about 380km and real-world likely less than that.

“The range offered today is the longest of any mainstream all-electric vehicle,” Renault claimed, saying average daily commuting distances were well within capabilities.

“The new battery removes the final psychological barrier that stands in the way of buying an electric car, so-called ‘range anxiety’, since users can now travel further and enjoy a wider variety of driving situations without worry about charging.”
