The Philippine new vehicle market continued to strengthen in July 2019 with sales rising by 13.5% to 31,810 units from 28,038 units in the same month of last year, according to member wholesale data released jointly by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA).
Passenger car sales rebounded strongly last month, by almost 35% to 9,397 units after underperforming earlier in the year, while commercial vehicle sales rose by just 6.4% to 22,413 units.
The data did not include non-affiliated brands such as Hyundai, Chevrolet and Subaru, which together accounted for around 12% of the total market last year.
Hyundai reported separately it had sold 1,777 vehicles in July and 17,148 year to date.
Sales in the first seven months of the year were up by 3.2% at 205,945 units from 199,628 units in the same period of last year, according to the associations' data.
Passenger cars sales were still down 1.8% at 61,815 units in this period while commercial vehicle sales were 5.5% higher at 144,130 units – helped by strong demand for pickup trucks and newly launched passenger utility vehicles (PUVs).
