Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, Germany, has built its 20 millionth car. The nominated vehicle was an S500 plug-In hybrid.
Sindelfingen is home base for upper range and luxury-class vehicles and is 100 years old in 2015. It began as an airplane and airplane engines factory and later made vehicle bodies. Complete car output started in 1946.
By 2020, we will spend EUR1.5bn on an ultramodern and flexible production facility here in Sindelfingen. This will allow us to offer our customers even more options for individualization and to safeguard our top quality,” said Mercedes production chief Markus Schäfer. “Our focus continues to be on our workforce – we are reducing the degree of automation. At the same time, we are applying modern robots that work hand in hand with our employees without a protective fence, and which assist them with strenuous tasks.”
The plant now employs approximately 26,000 people. Last year, 367,313 cars were built.
