New vehicle sales in Malaysia fell by 8.7% to 50,273 units in January, from 55,066 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Passenger vehicle sales amounted to 50,273 units and commercial vehicle sales 5,571 units.

The association blames heavy discounting in December which, it said, brought forward car sales from January.

Lunar new year holidays this month means sales will also be weak, the MAA added.
