Proton
is closing its Malaysian assembly line created to build Lotus Elise sportscars
for regional distribution, relying instead on cars imported from the UK, reports
Auto-Asia online (28/11/00).
According to the article, factors involved in this decision included the time
it took to sell the 150 CKD packs imported in the first phase which – with
volumes so low – proved difficult for local suppliers to build components
at competitive prices.
The1997 Asian financial crisis that resulted in the depreciation of the riggit
against sterling was also cited as an influential factor, said Auto-Asia.
