Magna has opened its aluminium casting facility in Telford, England, to supply structural castings to Jaguar Land Rover creating 300 new jobs.
The new 225,000 square feet facility – first announced two years ago – will use Magna’s vacuum die-casting process. The lightweight aluminium castings help maximise strength and stiffness and minimise weight.
As electrified and hybrid powertrains become more common in the automotive industry, high-pressure aluminium castings can be a key factor in reducing overall vehicle weight.
“These are new jobs being created – it is significant,” a Magna spokesman in Germany told just-auto. “We are building it due to the needs of our customers there. We are where our customer is.”
The Magna spokesman added the plant would be open to other customers as well, but for the moment the main client is JLR.
“With this new aluminium casting facility, we have established a centre of excellence to bring advanced structural casting technologies to the UK,” said Magna’s operating unit, Cosma International president, John Farrell.
