Toyota is to import 20,000 to 30,000 British-made Avensis sedans a year to sell in its Japanese home market, Automotive News reported, citing the Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s online Saturday edition.

The newspaper incorrectly claimed that Toyota would be the first Japanese automaker to sell European-built cars at home. Nissan has previously imported the UK-built Primera five-door hatchback and the Spanish-made Terrano SUV while Honda currently imports the UK-built Civic Type R.

Automotive News said Toyota would import the 1.8-litre petrol engined Avensis after it is fully redesigned early next year.
