New vehicle sales in Japan continued to fall in September, by 7.6% to 479,375 units from 518,772 units in the same month of last year, according to data released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Most segments of the market were weaker, with passenger car sales falling by 7.4% to 399,760 units and truck sales falling by 8.6% to 78,226 units. Bus sales were 3.7% higher at 1389 units, however.

Sales in the first nine month of the year fell by 9.5% to 3,908,150 units, from an eight-year high of 4,318,311 units in the same period of last year. Passenger cars led the market lower with a 10.7% fall to 3,278,720 units, while truck sales fell by just under 3% to 619,060 units in this period. Bus sales were 9.3% higher at 10,300 units in the same period. 

Market leader Toyota’s sales fell by just under 7% to 1,098,897 units in the first nine months of the year, while second-placed Honda saw its sales fall by 16.6% to 569,458 units; Suzuki 492,922 units (-16%); Nissan 471,224 units (-13.4%); Daihatsu 466,288 units (-16%); Mazda 202,175 units (17.3%); Subaru 127,277 units (+6.5%); Mitsubishi 81,554 units (-20.7%); and Isuzu 58,246 units (+1.6%).
