Japanese steel giant Kobe Steel is reportedly working on a new generation of lightweight composite materials designed for fuel cell vehicles with a view to saving weight and improving the safety of hydrogen tanks in collisions.

Nikkei reported that the company has created a new unit tasked with the project at its R&D base.

The report said that researchers there will test combinations of materials, including steel, aluminium, carbon fibre and composite resins.

The report added that Kobe Steel will propose fuel cell materials solutions to automakers and hopes to commercialise the products around 2025.
