Despite being assigned diesel engine development for the General Motors group,
Isuzu is to develop a direct injected version of its current three-litre petrol
V6 used in the Japanese market Bighorn (exported as the Jackaroo) and various
other Isuzu, Honda, Vauxhall, Holden, Chevrolet and Opel-badged SUVs sold around
the world.

Though GM will in future buy all its petrol engines bar a three-litre V6 from
GM, sources say Isuzu wants to use the direct petrol injection V6 project to
learn more about the electronic control technology essential for low-emission
diesel engine development.

As well as supplying diesel engines to GM, Isuzu is soon to ship a 1.7-litre
diesel to Honda UK to install in European Civics.
