The Japanese commercial vehicle maker Hino and Swedish heavy-duty truck maker, Scania, are involved in talks over possible collaboration. Hino admitted that talks are taking place following Japanese press reports.
A deal would allow the two firms to share the high and rising costs of developing environmentally friendly powertrain technology and fill out their respective product line-ups. Hino could supply medium-duty trucks and engines to Scania, the latter providing Hino with heavy-duty product.
Hino is 50% owned by Toyota and is Japan’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles.
The admission that the two sides are in talks will increase speculation that Toyota could, at some point in the future, bid for Scania.
