Sales in Japan of Toyota’s Prius petrol-electric hybrid vehicle passed 1m last month, the automaker said.
Domestic sales reached 1.02m as of the end of August, Toyota told Kyodo News.
The first generation Prius sedan was launched in December 1997 in Japan only and exports began in 2000. The second (2003) and third generations (May 2009) were hatchbacks and Toyota is now expanding the line with wagon and seven-seat versions, according to market.
Cumulative worldwide sales of the Prius totaled 2.36m vehicles as of 31 August, with the hybrid sold in 70 countries and territories, Toyota said.
