Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is to launch seven new Alfa Romeo models in a bid to increase sales of the sports car brand five-fold, according to Germany’s Auto Bild magazine.

A relaunch of the famous Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands is a key part of the automaker’s plans to return to profit in Europe by 2016. It is targeting Alfa sales of at least 500,000 vehicles a year compared with around 100,000 last year, the magazine said in an unsourced report.

Fiat Chrysler did not comment on the article and plans to unveil its new industrial plan on 6 May. Auto Bild said the company plans to release a convertible Spider by 2016, followed by sedan and wagon versions of the Giulia and Alfetta models in 2017 and 2018.

Also planned, said the magazine, are two crossover SUVs, a compact and a larger one, which will come to the market in 2017 and 2018. The MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks currently in production will not be replaced as previously anticipated.

Chief executive Sergio Marchionne believes that the Alfa and Maserati brands can raise Fiat Chrysler’s global profile although the carmaker has failed to revitalise Alfa since it acquired it in 1986. A previous plan to boost sales to half a million by 2014 were scaled back following the six-year slump in European sales.
