New vehicle sales in Indonesia rose by 69% in May to 60,512 units, compared with depressed year-earlier levels of 35,818 units, according to data released by the industry.

The market’s continued recovery from last year’s sharp fall reflects historically-low interest rates and strong consumer confidence.

Compared with peak volumes of 65,232 units reported in April, the market was slightly weaker, however.

Cumulative sales for the first five month of the year rose by 75.7% to 299,822 units, compared with 170,679 units a year earlier. The best-selling Toyota brand sold 114,178 vehicles; followed by Mitsubishi-Fuso with 43,273 units; Daihatsu 42,687; Suzuki 27,712; and Honda 22,958.
