Hyundai Motor has signed an agreement with Lippo Malls Indonesia (LMI) to establish electric vehicle (EV) recharging stations in its 11 malls located in major cities across the Indonesian island of Java.

According to the deal, LMI will provide parking spaces at easily accessible areas in its malls while Hyundai will install the recharging equipment.

The stations will be fitted with Type 2 combined charging systems (CCS) which means they will be compatible with most EVs.

While Hyundai is one of the smaller brands in Indonesia, it has taken the lead in the EV segment having delivered 170 battery powered Kona and Ioniq models to its dealers in the first two months of 2021.

The company has just completed construction of a full scale vehicle assembly plant in Indonesia, just east of the capital city Jakarta, with pre-production set to begin in May. The company said it also plans to produce an EV model at the factory from 2022.

Hyundai Motor Indonesia chief operating officer Makmur said Hyundai is committed to "supporting Indonesia's EV ecosystem by providing electric cars and aftersales support, as well as engaging in collaborations to expedite EV infrastructure development".
