Volkswagen is in discussion with its largest shareholder, Porsche, about building the Porsche Panamera at Volkswagen’s plant in Hannover, according to the dpa-AFX news agency. A VW spokesperson confirmed a report in the Bild newspaper that Hannover is under consideration.

One of the major considerations is the sharp increase in competitiveness needed at Volkswagen. The Panamera work could replace the loss of the foundry at Hannover, which employs 1,300 people and is due to close.

The reports said that it was already known in company circles that Porsche wanted to contract out the body-in-white and painting for the Panamera, due to be launched in 2009, to Volkswagen. Bodies would be produced in Wolfsburg and then assembled in Porsche’s Leipzig plant.
