Hyundai’s mid-size i40, competing with the VW Passat, Opel Insignia and Ford Mondeo in Europe’s D-segment, now accounts for more than one-in-10 of the company’s sales in Europe.

In the first eight months of this year, Hyundai sold 21,128 i40s a of total of 190,635 vehicles, accounting for 11.1% of sales, according to industry figures.

That was more than double the share last year which included some units of the outgoing Sonata and 11,777 units of the i40 which was launched from July.

The unloved Sonata had previously struggled to make an impact, taking fewer than 1% of all Hyundai’s European sales – 0.8% in 2009 and 0.6% in 2010.
