According to the German press agency, Daimler released medical information that should have been kept confidential.
The company was reportedly trying to reduce absenteeism due to illness at its Untertürkheim plant, and individuals’ medical information was discussed amongst managers, without employees being informed that this was happening. In addition, people involved in these discussions should not have been.
A process called health and absenteeism management goes back to an agreement between management and the works council in 2003. This allowed for discussions with employees where there had been prolonged or repeated illness. The idea was that by working together the employee and management could reduce unplanned absenteeism and speed recovery.
The company accepted that the process had been mishandled at Untertürkheim.
