The VDA has said that car sales in December rose to 229,700 units with a rise of 3% in the year as a whole to 3.04m sales.

The industry in Germany will be relieved that the market grew in 2014 after two years of decline. Topping the 3m units barrier will also be a confidence booster. However, concerns remain over the outlook for the German economy and how strong consumer confidence will be in 2015.

The VDA also expressed some concern that the private retail element of the car market was not stronger in 2014.

VDA President Matthias Wissmann said that private demand for new cars could have been higher, given relatively orderly economic conditions in 2014. “The market result is slightly better than expected but not a cause for celebration,” he said.
