General Motors has said the restart of vehicle production at its component and assembly plants in North America has gone smoothly thanks to strong teamwork.

The company also said that its comprehensive safety procedures are working well, and ‘the suppliers have done a great job implementing their return-to-work strategies and safety playbooks.’ GM said it is now in a position to increase production to meet strengthening customer demand and strong dealer demand.

Starting today, three crossover assembly plants in the United States and Canada will be operating two production shifts, and three US assembly plants building mid- and full-size pickups will move from one- to three-shift operations. Five other U.S. assembly plants will operate one production shift.

Last week Ford halted production at its Kansas city assembly plant (on the Transit side) after a worker tested positive for COVID-19. The Transit van assembly area of the plant underwent a deep clean as result of the development. During the first week of the industry restart (week commencing May 18), Ford also shut down its Chicago Assembly Plant twice for issues related to coronavirus at the plant and involving a supplier.
