Volkswagen do Brasil has begun exporting its locally-built Saveiro compact pickup to Abu Dhabi. This is the first time that VW Brazil has sold vehicles to the Arabian emirate that could soon be the second-largest shareholder in Germany’s Volkswagen AG.

Volkswagen do Brasil is shipping a first batch of 90 Saveiros. The model is a pickup based derivative of the Gol compact hatchback and the vehicles shipped to Abu Dhabi have virtaully the same specifications as those sold in Brazil. The only change to the 1.8-litre, eight-valve, petrol engine is the installation of a second radiator to help it cope with higher temperatures.

The initial agreement between VW do Brasil and Abu Dhabi anticipates shipping 300 vehicles by the end of the year.
