The European Commission is proposing to simplify European legislation for the type-approval of vehicles in the EU.

The EC said that its proposal would end the duality of regulations of between EC Directives and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the type-approval of vehicles.

The proposal will now be transmitted to the Member States for approval.

Under the proposal, type-approval issued under the UNECE Regulations will be considered as EC type-approval.

The EC said that duplication in technical requirements, certification and administrative procedures will be avoided to the benefit of both industry and national authorities.

In addition, it said the proposal will also improve market access for European car manufacturers in those third countries which are contracting parties to the UNECE Agreement of 1958 and ‘thus boost the competitiveness of European industry’.
