The government in El Salvador is now enforcing a law prohibiting transit buses over 15 years old. According to the American Embassy in San Salvador, more than 4,000 old buses will be taken out of circulation, and replaced by at least 2,500 buses over the next 18 months, with models not older than 1996.

Bus ownership in El Salvador is fragmented between 2,000 different companies, but the Government has also encouraged them to partner up to constitute nine new associations.
