General Motors and Brazilian energy giant Petrobras have signed a cooperation agreement to start tests of biofuels in cars in Chile.

The tests will be made with two models, Chevrolet Prisma and Chevrolet S10, both equipped with flex-fuel powertrains and will assess the performance in different environment, height and atmospheric conditions, Petrobras Chile said.

The take-up of biofuels in Brazil has been high, but outside of Brazil it is much lower. Petrobras sees an opportunity to expand into other South American markets while Chile’s government also favours a degree of energy diversification.

The tests are expected to take place in the coming months.
