Toyota has offered a glimpse of its latest autonomous ‘driverless’ car technologies at the CES (consumer electronics) Show in Las Vegas.
The vehicle, based on a Lexus LS, showcases a raft of integrated safety management technologies which Toyota says constitutes a “holistic blend of people, vehicles and the driving environment”.
There are active safety systems designed to avoid collisions as well as an array of sensors and automated control systems to observe, process and respond to the vehicle’s surroundings. These include GPS, stereo cameras, radar and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) laser tracking.
In short, it sounds broadly similar – in outline – to Google’s driverless car.
Toyota is also researching Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that utilise vehicle-to-vehicle (‘V2V’) and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications to further improve driving systems.
