Michelin may set up a second tyre plant in India to cater to the growing passenger vehicle segment.

The company said that much will depend on the success of its upcoming plant in Tamil Nadu for commercial vehicles. A second plant may follow in two to three years.

Michel Rollier, managing general partner, Michelin, speaking on the sidelines of Challenge Bibendum, the company’s annual flagship event, said: “We may look at a passenger car tyre plant as well.”

He added that the company’s current focus is on the truck and the bus market in India and it will continue to import tyres for passenger cars through its dealer network.

Just under 2m passenger cars were sold in India last year but this is projected to more than double within the next five years.
